Make this Advent Shine

Anticipation. Longing. Hope. I am feeling all these things as we enter into the Advent season. I use this time to reflect on the year, pray about the year ahead, and seek wisdom on how I am spending my time.

Here are a few ways you can make this Advent Season shine.

Reflect:

I spend some time asking myself questions to process the year. How did this year shape up compared to what I hoped? What am I learning? How am I growing? What do I need to pay attention to? How did my word of the year lead me?

Word:

Each year, I prayerfully choose a word that will be a guide stone of sorts as I go about my year. I take this time to search out the word that embodies what I wish to lead me through the upcoming year. Past words have been light, open, and intentional. It’s amazing to see how these words have shaped my frame of mind and helped to center me throughout the year.

Practice:

Adopt an Advent practice. Some people choose to do an advent calendar which is a great way to get the family involved. Others make an advent wreath and light a candle each Sunday during advent. There are also art projects and collaborations. Personally, I participate AdventWord and try to post something to Instagram every day following the provided prompts. There are other collective art projects available for Advent out there. A simple Google search should bring you plenty to choose from. I’ll post some of my AdventWord creations at the bottom of this blog. Here are a few links for Advent wreaths and calendars:

Playlist:

Create or follow an advent playlist on Spotify for Amazon Music. I like this one from Sacred Ordinary Days. Music is a great way to get into the spirit of the season. It ushers me into a place of reflection and nostalgia.

It is my hope and prayer that the Advent season is a blessing to you. I invite you to quiet your heart during this extremely busy time of year to reflect on the past and ponder what is to come. May you be filled with expectation and longing as we celebrate Advent.
